Cemil Gökhan Karacan

Abstract

Violence against women has continued to be reported more and more worldwide and in Turkey. This qualitative multiple case study aims to explore the reasons for violence against women from their perspectives and experiences. Their participants were six women aged 34-58 currently living in Istanbul, Turkey. In this study, data were collected from six women, who were exposed to violence by their male partners, through semi-structured interviews. Collected data were analyzed using the content analysis method (Strauss & Corbin, 1998). Findings revealed several main factors leading to violence against women such as drinking and gambling addiction, lack of education, disagreement between partners, financial issues, family structure and upbringing of children, and reflection of traditional society. The possible effect of personality and disposition along with the juridical system was also uttered by the participants.
